Virtual worlds is a new frontier in computer science and interaction design. Pioneering efforts are evolving into accessible frameworks for education, work and socializing. As computer processing power increases, the immersive experience of a virtual environment improves and the best is yet to come.
The word 'virtual' belies the fact that learning, sharing, communicating and experiencing are all real components of a virtual world. The fact that people can interact at a distance in ways that often mimic real-life interactions is one powerful aspect of this technology. Additionally, virtual environments can provide experiences that would otherwise be unlikely or even impossible.
Design for a virtual world draws from many disciplines because it offers a variety of interaction opportunities. Architecture, computer programming, e-learning and graphic design are all essential in the creation of the best in virtual world experiences. And, since the field is still young, it helps when the designer understands computer networks, operating systems and graphics applications, and can offer training and support.
The role of the virtual world designer is to create virtual environments that work on many levels to support the goals of the client. This requires the creation of original 3D objects, 2D textures, program code for animations and interactions, and an aesthetic for appealing and functional environmental design. Appropriate training and support promotes a positive long-term result and high return on investment.
Virtual worlds are a specialty of Lawrence Pierce.
