E-learning

E-learning encompasses a broad variety of methods for computer-mediated interactive learning. The focus here is on new media design and production. There are tested principles that have guided the work showcased in this site to produce effective learning materials.

New media design and production is that aspect of e-learning that is the interface between the subject matter and the learner. In a typical project, subject matter experts provide content while a designer creates the computer-mediated presentation. The design of that presentation is crucial towards the success of the learning experience.

Studies have shown that words and related graphics are more effective for learning than words alone, especially for novice learners. Furthermore, spoken words and graphics are more effective than visual words and graphics, an understanding that comes from the cognitive theory of learning, and grounded in neuroscience. To implement these principles and others effectively requires a designer with a background in both design and learning theories.

When designing e-learning materials, you want something more than pleasing aesthetics, you want effective instruction that is rich in graphics that provide appropriate learning affordances.
